Racing Suits

If you’ve spent any time in a race car like Ben Tunny has, you know pretty quickly that what you wear matters. Ben’s been lucky enough to win a few championships over the years, but none of that happens without gear he can actually trust. That’s why he’s highlighting some racing suits you can pick up on sale now at Polk Brothers’ Racing.

People think racing suits are just these big black hunks of Kevlar with no personality. And that’s sort of true—they do tend to lack pizzazz and look a bit utilitarian. But to Ben, your suit isn’t just another item you throw on before a race. It literally has your back when things get unpredictable, and unpredictable is the name of the game even for seasoned vets. Yeah, your car setup is huge, but your suit is what’s protecting you from heat, fire, and everything else that comes with being out there on the track.

Some suits are a one-piece and others are a two-piece, it’s totally up to you which one you prefer. Materials like Nomex are great because they handle the heat but don’t make you feel like you’re suffocating in the car. And with materials like Kevlar and PBI, you’re getting serious protection without giving up comfort.

For Ben, it’s pretty simple. He want something that confers great protection, while feeling good as well. If it’s stiff, bulky, or puts up a fight against my body, he’d prefer not to wear it. “My biggest thing is it being soft, and not all rigid and stiff but still maintaining its safety integrity,” he says.

Basically, Ben likes suits that fit so well that he doesn’t have to think about them, allowing him to focus entirely on going as fast as he can.

His car may be his life, but his suit can save it!

Ben has had good experiences with brands like Alpinestars, Simpson, K1, and Velocita. They all make solid stuff, he says, and whether you’re newer to racing or you’ve been at it a while, there’s something out there that’ll fit what you need.

Ben is a big fan of custom suits when and if you can swing it. Getting something that actually fits your body makes a big difference once you’re strapped in, and he especially loves giving business to our local Indianapolis shops, such as Hinchman Racing Uniforms.

Yes, suits are utilitarian, but they’re also really cool. You’ve got different styles, different layers, all kinds of options depending on what you’re looking for.

At the end of the day, it’s about having gear you trust and people who know what they’re doing. That’s why Ben likes what Polk Brothers’ Racing is doing. It really feels like they’re in the pits with me! They’ve got really solid, high-quality stuff, and they actually care about helping racers get what they need.

Whether you’re getting ready for race day or just developing a new interest, it’s worth checking them out.

Features that Matter

Fire resistance (SFI/FIA rating)

The most critical factor. Determines how long you’re protected in a fire.

Materials & Layers

Nomex or similar fabrics. More layers = more protection, but potentially less mobility.

Fit & Mobility

Should be snug but allow full range of motion (arms, shoulders, knees).

Breathability & Ventilation

Helps manage heat during races. Look for moisture-wicking liners or vents.
